Moving to a new home can be a stressful process and if you’re going through it, or you are about to, here we tell you some helpful advice to make the best of your experience with the moving company you hired.
Let’s start.
1. Anticipate
Timing is everything even when it comes to moving to a new place. We suggest you start packing your things as early as possible and to have your moving service scheduled with months of anticipation if possible.
2. Throw away
One of the most difficult things for some people to do when moving is to get rid of a bunch of thing they no longer need, but if you think about it, what’s the point of moving things you don’t need to your new place? You’d be just wasting your own space, so we suggest you take your time to do a good clean up.
3. Essentials go with you
When you’re packing your things, keep in mind you’d want your essentials with you and not at the bottom of some box at your new place. Keep your important paperwork, medicines and everyday things with you, don’t send them in the moving truck, in case of an emergency they’re better with you.
And here’s another key point to keep in mind:
4. Movers don’t move everything
Surprising, right? But this is very important, because there are certain things that the company won’t move in their moving van.
Here you have some of those items:
Hazardous or flammable materials such as:
- Bleach
- Fireworks
- Gasoline
- Matches
- Nail polish remover
- Pain
- Paint thinner
- Pesticides
- Weedkiller
- Propane tanks
- Aerosol cans
Yes, this could be upsetting because everything you have at your house is important for you, but don’t worry, you can transport it yourself if you have enough space.
There are some regulations about its transportation and most companies just won’t deal with it, besides, this is part of their security policies in most cases, be sure to ask about it when negotiating with the local movers.
5. Other items to move
Plants.
Now, the plants. If this is a long distance moving, and you’re going from one state to another, you may want to consult the types of plants that can cross the state borders. Now, you’re the one that has to transport them, because moving companies usually won’t move potted plants.
Food.
Yes, might seem kind of odd, but this is for a good reason. It’s a food safety issue and applies only to perishable food. So under normal circumstances, a professional moving company won’t be moving any food that can spoil, because it can attract pest and bugs, and if it goes with the rest of your stuff, can get infested. Also, if the food goes bad, it is dangerous and cause some kind of illness to you or your family.
We know this can be a little uncomfortable, but you can carry it yourself or just plan your last food purchase with enough time to not have to transport it nor waste it.
Liquor.
If you were planning to celebrate with your special wine bottle once you get to your new home, this can be a little upsetting for you, but here we go and break it out for you.
As you know, alcohol is flammable and this is an issue for transportation because of the danger it represents. Also, liquor laws vary from one state to another, so many restrictions exists when crossing states lines.
So, if your case applies here, we recommend you consult with the appropriate authorities, so you can legally and safely move your bottles.
6. Good labels
Now you know what you cannot send with your movers and for the things you can actually send, we suggest you label your boxes correctly, either with the place it belongs to or with the things it contains.
This will make your life easier when unboxing your stuff.
Finally, we suggest you ask all the needed questions to your moving contractor or company, that way you can clear all the doubts you have for this big moment of your life.
